How to remove carbs

I'm not sure if is the correct area to discuss mechanical issues, but has anyone removed the carbs from a 1996 Yamaha Royal Star? Is there a proper procedure to removing them? I've removed the tank and air box, but then it looks very tight around the frame. Do they come off as a set of four, or do you have to remove the plate on top of the carbs and remove the coolant hose that runs next to them?

I swear by good manuals. This one I've even printed the entire thing and had put into a binder.

To be old and wise, first, you must be young and stupid. I've really got the young part out of the way now.
