What’s The Difference Between Rake And Trail?

Quote:
Dear MOby,

So is it the rake or the trail that determines how fast or slow a bike steers? Lot of things I read and hear seem to use the two interchangeably at random? Which is it?

i think trail has something to do with the bike wanting to fall over at low speeds. altho a cb650 f would be managable.

Rake is the angle between vertical and the head tube centerline.

Trail is the horizontal distance between the middle of the head tube and the axle. Drop a plumb line through both the head tube and the axle. The distance between where each plumb line touchs the ground is the trail.

Generally, a longer trail, and higher rake (as on a cruiser) aids in stability. A shorter trail, and smaller rake (think sport bike) is less stable and, therefore more maneuverable.

just off the top of my head i think trail is the distance between a plumb line from the axel and the point where if you followed the tubes to the point where they would touch the ground.
