10w 40 ro 20w 50 oil in my V Star 1100?

Hi To All;

I am the proud new owner of a 2007 V Star 1100 Classic and the last oil change time period is unknown (auction buy) - also I am yet to get an owners manual - so I NEED to change the oil.

From what I have read Yamaha recommends a 20w50 oil? Would 10w40 be OK? I ride in Canada BC and (when it's riding season) the temperatures are usually between 12 degrees C (54 F) to 25 degrees C (77 F).

I do plan on taking trips to warmer climates (e.g. California) a few times per year - what would be a good all round oil weight?

All oils that meat API service SE, SF, SG type will be fine. Yamaha's recommended oil for your temperature is SAE20w40.

Yes 10w40 will be ok but since the 1100 is air cooled I'd use 15w50 or 20w50. I use Valvoline 20w50 synthetic in my V Star 950T.

from what I understand the first number (e.g. 10) is the viscosity of the oil cold (at start-up) and the second number e.g. 40 is the viscosity at running temp.

I have always run 10W40 in every bike I have owned in this climate (air and liquid cooled) with no issues - why does the V Star 1100 need a thicker oil?

NOTE: this is my first bike with larger than a 750cc engine does this make a difference?

My mechanic says to use MA2 rated oil. I have near 20K on my 07 bike and not problem one, Check it out.

I use 15w50 Mobil1. If I could get Mobil 1 5W50 I'd use that, but it's not available in my area. The reason for wanting the cold viscosity number to be as low as possible is that the oil has to get to where its needed on start-up, where most of engine damage occurs. Notice the little lines that run to the heads of your Vstar. The reason for the 50wt oil at operating temp is the amount of weight being transferred by the large pistons. In an engine the bearings are not supposed to touch surfaces. The oil provides the cushion that keeps these tight tolerances apart. As the engine gets hotter it gets easier to squeeze this cushion out. So an oil with a higher viscosity at operating temps works better. The reason its hard to find oil with these wide ranging viscosities is that for the most part it's done through additives (polymer chains) that shear away as the oil gets used.

I have been doing some research and it seems as though you should run the narrowest range possible in oil weights e.g. 20w40 as opposed to a 15w50 as there are less polymers and additives in the oil (they are not needed to provide as large of a viscosity range throught fluctuating temps). It is said that the presence of polymers and additives can cause the oil to leave residues (leading to sticking valves/rings) when they are burned off?

Any thoughts?

Also just to add fuel to the fire: what are peoples stand points on the whole full synthetic. mineral based or synthetic blend oil in the V Star?
