I have an 05 1100 classic and ride normally,no burnouts etc.after downshifting thru a turn it started making a noise in the drivetrain, rode it home,1 mile, opened up the left side covers, looked into the hole by the speedo sensor and could see the nut containing the end of the middle drive gear shaft broke off and had been bouncing around inside the universal yoke that connects to the rear shaft.Being a good mechanic this looked like a defective shaft as there is no way to openly maintain this component. After checking several links I have found this to be a regular problem with the 1100 vstar of various years.I note that most mechanical problems are not a safety issue but I would have hated for this breakage to occur at 55mph on a wet road with the broken nut locking up the rear drive.
