is it worth it to just let them do it? removing the exhaust seems like a hassle. I got the tools and the know how. and I also got the checkbook

Here is my take on it. I have know the Yamaha dealer for many years and I would like for him to stay in business for a long time to come. I have more tools then I no what to do with and the oil change is not that hard. The last change for me was 69.99 that is if I remember right. By the way He is building a new shop that will be open soon.

Farmall makes a good point, on the other hand, for folks like me"no tengo mucho dinero" I would , givin a choice, rather keep me in business:cool: I done the pipe drop for awhile, figgered it up and got an ORK, the thing paid for it's self shortly.

Just me here, but I highly recommend an ork for the 1100, unless you just like to do that. This is for for sure one of those "different strokes for different folks" things. Do what you feel good with:D Ride safe.

69.99??? I was quoted over $300!!! Geez wish the local shop was that cheap. However I have a good friend that operates the 129 Motorcycle Pit Stop on the Dragon and he is just charging me for the filter. :)

I called the local guys today. $125 I think I will do it myself. At that point I'll know if it's worth paying them for the next one.

I was a little nervous about it at first, and although I never got a quote from the dealer, I assumed it would cost more that way, so I did it myself. Turned out it wasn't that bad. Kind of pain, yes, but not as much so as I thought it would be. The first time took me about an hour (with 2 beer breaks), from then on I'm guessing it'll be about an hour (+1bb).:D

Then again, once I do finally get an ORK, which I would like to do someday, the oil change should take about an hour.:confused::D

An hour easy, with beer breaks. As long as you got your stuff ready to go when you are, it is a whiz with an ork.:D Be safe, ride safe.

buy a Clymer (http://www.clymer.com/) paying 80-130 per hour for labor is plain stupidity

Just curious. Those of you that got quotes what type of oil were they using? I do my own wrenching and 4litres of amsoil and a filter cost damn near $100.
I do agree with you Farmall about helping the local guy but our nearest Yamaha shop is 150 kms away. So for now, I'll just help myself.

I have pulled a tool:o all my life and now I don't have to so I don't:eek:

We must be buying oil at Canadian Tire.

Call me. I will set you up with a Preferred Customer Membership which will let you purchase direct at CT's cost.

Newbie question: what's an ORK?

Oil filter Relocation Kit. Moves the oil filter down and in front of the engine so you don't have to remove the front exhaust pipe to gain access to it. Just did my 1100 classic with a Jardine ORK. Not sure what other models were designed by an engineer who's never turned a wrench.

gotcha. thanks stargazer. i think the 650 has the same issue. You wont use ORK on a 650. Only 1100

I'll definitely be ORKing my bike if I need it - I'll never pay someone to change my oil.
