I saw several of these spiders walking with my dog yesterday. This is a picture of it's belly. Just a really creepy belly marking I think. What type is it?

G'Day Chalms.

Although the colouring is a little different they have the exact shape of the Saint Andrews Cross Spider that we have here in Australia. Ours are mostly black with yellow banding but the shape is exactly the same.

I agree it's a Saint Andrews Cross Spider, considered low risk good for gardens. JDM

I find it amazing that they'd be walking with your dog! Never realized that spiders need exercise!:D:D:D

it's the jumping death spider. they can leap up to 20 yards without warning. usually go for the face. one bite can kill you and anyone you've recently been in contact with. will go through your phone's listings and begin picking off your friends and relatives one at a time. is easily subdued with Otis Redding's album The Dock of the Bay.

I believe that would be a Can-Am Spider

That's the one Dan...they are found ALL over the south! I actually caught one and kept it as a pet for over a year when I was a kid. Not sure of their life span but the one I had was awesome.

My money is on Wart's spider:cool: (Wart's spider even has a headlight to see in the dark)

Near as I can tell SB, that is actually a relection from one or two of it's eyes. After seeing the "headlight" I killed the lights and shone a flashlight at the gentle giant and could see a very faint reflection, but nothing close to what the camera flash picture created.

It was a bit chilly and the arachnid was pretty lethargic so I coaxed him walk onto the back of my hand. Maybe not one of most risky moves but I wanted to get a feel for the weight of it. It felt like the weight of a nickel on the back of my hand.

The sad part is, the spider is a helluva lot better looking than that poster child for Nair...:D:D:D

I would picked that one there up and taken it home as a pet. Tarantulas in this part of the world are called New World Tarantulas...much less aggressive than those found in Asia/Africa area, or Old World Tarantulas. I've had 4 tarantulas as pets and they are pretty damned docile as long as you follow the information about new world/old world.
