2000 Vstar Classic 1100 with 40,000 miles.

I have an extremely annoying squeal/whine in 5th gear only during acceleration not deceleration.

Could this be the clutch basket whine others have spoke of here?

I have the gear whine on my 2002 1100 (18K miles) , in most any gear. I don't believe it happens on acceleration, hard to hear over the Cobra pipes. Just coasting or deceleration. It is the type of gear tooth cut Yamaha uses in the transmission/clutch. It a shame that the motor is that noisey, but they are reliable. Hope yours is nothing more then "normal" or maybe a new clutch.
