Removing muffler from Stratoliner

Ok, I do not have a lift and need reading glasses. To remove the muffler to put on a new Rush Slip-on I can't see the bolts. I can feel three bolts on the backside that have allen heads and I assume the allen head underneath at the front of the muffler is a ring clamp???

I can't get under the bike and see at the same time and I am sure this should be a simple unbolt and bolt back on. Then unhook the battery so the bike resets itself.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Fitz.

Exhaust

Yep..Three on muffler body...2 around the middle 1 towards the front...1 ring clamp....you need 6mm allen key for three behind muffler...5mm for ring clamp...you will need to jiggle muffler to remove it pulling backwards at the same time.....:p
Send some photos when you are done please....

Fritz,

You can take the muffler off mostly by feel but, it might get harder to install the new bolts unless you can see the holes. I had a set of glasses with the bifocal in the top and bottom. (Called double D.)Sure helped. For one job you might think of a pair of $10 reading glasses. So you can look through the top. Maybe lay a mirror on the floor under the job.

If all this fails I think I would look for some help. Good luck.

Muffler removeale

Hi, i hope i can make this a simple deal for you.
don't try to undo the allen head bolts.

1. loosen the ring clamp. you can lay on your side and see this easily.
2. remove the two bolts holding the aluminum arm the muffler is supported by. also easily reachable by laying on your side. then the whole assembly slides rearward and is off in a minute. USE CAUTION NOT TO DAMAGE THE GASKET MATERIAL AT THR RING CLAMP END. IT IS INSIDE THE PIPE.
3. remove the aluminum bracket from the muffler which you can now easily face toward you for easy access.

now all you have to do is mount the new muffler LOOSELY to the mount bracket then slide it back on to the pipe. adjust the muffler on the bracket and tighten in place. then tighten ring clamp.
VERY EASY.
it is way harder if you try to loosen the allen head bolts as they have loctite holding them in. mine was hard to get loose even when it was off the bike. i wouldn't want to try it upside down trying to see these hidden allen heads. plus if you screw up the allen heads you will have a really hard time from there on. just undo the two blots and the ring clamp and slide it off. the do the bracket.

Got the Rush Slip-on put on last week and have had it out 3 times. I disconnected the battery like someone had said on another post and it seems to be running pretty rich. Not only decel pop but outright backfire.

The muffler is quite a bit louder than the stock muffler at highway speed and when you get on it a lot louder. Will have to do something about the backfires.

Didn't think I was going to have to use fuel management with putting on another slip-on.

I recently put on a slip-on too

Hi mfitz62,

Sorry to hear about your backfire issue. bummer. I recently added a D&D slip-on to my '08 roadliner and have about 250 miles on it. It pops a little bit but doesn't backfire. It used to pop even with the stock muffler but just did it alot quieter. I didn't disconnect the battery during the install process...maybe I should have. I don't have a power commander and don't plan to get one since this thing has way more power and torque than I will ever need. I'm thinking maybe your roadhouse exhaust is more free flowing than my D&D? I live at sea level in north florida and the computer has the stock settings.

Slight popping is kind of normal.. Check the clamp and retorque after its been warmed up it will tighten a bit. Then you can go to liner wiki and do the CO mod, it richens the idle so that when the decel pop or shifting pop is what you hear, usually fixes that. One of the tries this summer I will do, It is quiet now, winter and it thinks its cold so runs richer and doesn't pop. Lot of the Raider forum guys are doing a mod to the temp sensor in the headlight, that fixes, but easier to do the CO mod, and can be set back to normal. I have the Roadhouse.

I bought a set of the Rush slip-ons also but I haven't received them yet. I called the company I bought them from Competition Accessories and was told by customer service they don't come with baffles. I guess you have to buy those separate. The only size they sell he are 1.75" part#19-4547 for $71.99. That's why they are so loud I suspect and maybe why they are backfiring. I guess I'm going to have to order the baffles too.

Baffles, yes.

My Roadhouse came with the baffles in. i bought it used on ebay though. got it for 285.00 and saved a hundred bucks. it looked like brand new. i would guess if i had no baffles it would be the loudest thing on the planet. set off earth quake detectors.
mine also pops but doesn't back fire like a cannon. not sure how loud your is. i've heard rumors there is an air injection system and that the pop will not go away unless you disable it. it adds O2 and that causes the explosion. the popping i get doesn't bother me.

Well I guess it might not have any baffles, that would explain why it is so loud. I bought this from Cruisercustomizing.com

Guess I am showing my ignorance about this. I have found the baffles on the rush racing products website. They offer 1.75 and 2.00 inch baffles for less than $40. Which one would be louder if anyone has any ideas I would appreciate hearing them.

Thanks.

I didn't realize they didn't have baffles either. I have read the larger the baffle the louder they will be. From what I've read most people seem to prefer the 2" they're not real loud at idle but loud enough when riding. I think I'm going with the 2" but it's personal preference I guess.

No problem Fitz, I hope they work out for you.First off I would verify you don't have baffles, I believe they're held in by 2 screws. You should be able to see them looking through the rear of the muffler. I was going to order some today but the sales person I spoke to seemed to think they already had baffles. My Rush slip-ons are on backorder until April, so I can't verify that and hopefully you can.

Ok guys, I wonder if we are all talking about the same muffler. Notice singular of muffler. I talked to Rush this afternoon and the slip-on is supposed to come with one of the baffles installed. I have not looked inside the pipe to see if a baffle is installed but I will this evening and let you all know. If you are purchasing the duels the baffles are not included and you have to purchase those extra. I will post more tomorrow.

Ok, had some time after work and looked inside. Baffles are in there and I would guess the 2". Brain this thing is almost loud enough to set off the E/Q sensors with the baffles in it.

If I am going to have to use some fuel management I will do the air mod that you spoke of. Do you remember which thread that was in?

Thanks, Fitz.
