Oil Temperature

I have a 2007 Vstar 1100 Custom with an oil relo kit, I installed an oil temperature guage this spring and thought I would supply information for those who were interested.

I run synthetic Mobil 1 15w-50 oil

It takes a good half hour for the engine to achive operating temperature.

At 75 degrees air temp the bike runs at 175 to 180 degrees f.

At 90 plus degrees air temp the bike runs around 195 degrees f.
These numbers are around town and cruising at or below 55 mph. On the interstate around 70 mph the bike runs (depending on the air temp) between 200 and 210 degrees. The only thing I can think of is that the oil is running through the engine much quicker at highway speeds and does have time to cool as adequately as it does at lower RPMs.

I bought the guage because I was worried about engine temp when I got stuck in traffic but as it turns out the bike runs cool and there is no worries in traffic.

Anybody have any other thoughts on this?

I have a 02-650 Classic, on extremely hot days I have been checking my temp with a non-contact infrared thermometer, it's been running 160 deg F. I am running slow between 12 and 22 MPH with my dogs. I bought the bike used and know it has 10w30 syn, I've bought the correct syn oil but have not got the filter yet. I'm in no hurry because I hardly ever go over 45 MPH. Before winter I will change it.

LOL I like to know my pressure and temp. That way I know if its time to find a cool beverage and a hot chica.

I'm not real concerned with oil temp on a bike that's air cooled, unless I've done something stupid and blocked the air flow. If I had a bike that was water cooled I'd be real concerned. I've had many wind shields and radiators busted while in my Pick up Truck, by rocks being thrown by on coming Tractor Trailers.

Okay, so it was 86 degrees today so I took the bike out for a highway run... I ran 4,000 rpm's (73 miles an hours) for 30 miles. The oil temperature was 230 degrees F. Now this engine was designed by a bunch of smart folks and has run a bunch of miles since it’s creation with little issue so I am not so sure there is much to worry about. I do run full synthetic but this is really making me lean towards an oil cooler.

Any opinions are welcome…

Oil temp

Neil,

There are lots of folks out there that don't have an oil temperature read out and they do just fine. But, I did often think of an oil cooler when I had my 1100. Can't hurt if you have room with the filter relocation kit. Did I worry too much? Probably. Are you worrying too much?

Oil Temp

Hi Neil01,

I think you are on the right track with changing out your oil filter and taking measurements. I have an 05' 1100 Silverado with 22k that I installed an oil cooler and changed from Valvoline 10-40 to Castrol 10-40 simi-syn. This bike also came with an outside filter kit. I bought an infarared thermometer and measured 265 deg F on the outside at midpoint of the rear , right jug after running at idle for 20 min. Basically the temp was the similar before and after the changes. The bike runs great. The jury is still out as to whether there is any net increase in cooling efficency. I know a couple of things: 1. The 1100 gets hot sitting at traffic, I know this from the heat I start to feel between my legs when I am stuck in rush hour. 2. Hi grade oil (including zinc and phospherous additives) goes a long way in increasing engine longetivity, 3. There is a lack of specific information addressing performance of lubricant cooling modifications. 4. There is no public information related to systematic lubricant overheating resulting in engine failures. More later.

cool

You should add it for your on minds comfort:D But the cooler is not needed at all- the motor is running right in is good zone of temp's
(even if water cooled, it is set up to run 180/210deg.)and at highway speeds you have to put more BTU in the motor so the temp's must go up.
