I have an issue with my '99 Road* fuel guage. When I turn the key, it cycles to full and back like it should but stays on E and light flashes. Is it the sending unit? If so, how hard to change and where to get one(besides dealership)? Thanx
Definitely the sending unit. It is a piece of cake to take out of the tank (underneath). I got mine at partzilla.com for about $57. Arrived in like 3 days. It's a very simple job. Trust me...I was able to do it!
Before you do that, there's also an eraser trick where you rub the contact with a pencil eraser to clean the contacts, and stick it back in. Worked for me.
If it worked, then that should indicate that it's the contacts that are bad, not the unit. Maybe something a bit more extreme to get it working longer than a week?
I replaced it & now it works flawlessly. I've seen a lot of posts on the Road Star Clinic from guys who had the same experience as me. Temporary fix but eventually stopped. Replaced & it worked.
Thanx folks! Saw a "how to" repair site on the web with pics. Except I took a look at my tank and didn't have to remove it at all!! Plenty of room to drop it rite out. Repair did not work so a new one is on the way. Easy job!!
I know this post is almost 5 years old. However, my fuel level indicator light constantly blinks. I am 99% sure the fuel sending unit is dead. I will look at things one of these weekends or evenings. I found this "how to" on it. https://www.flickr.com/photos/34533738@N00/sets/72157626532315797/
I'll let you guys know the outcome when I get to it.
