The Test Ride

Yesterday I got a call from my son asking if I would ride a motorcycle to another location for him. I asked what kind it was and was told that it was a cruiser. I said that I would come look at it and determine if I wanted the job. It turned out to be a 2013 Suzuki Boulevard C90T BOSS 1500 cc with 3500 miles on it. So I thought, "What the heck, It's a few cc's bigger than my 1300 but, I can do that."

I moved it to the new location without incident and got a free test drive in the process. It was a nice bike but, I wouldn't trade my Yammy for it even if they gave me some cash to sweeten the deal. It just didn't have the smoothness of the 1300 but, that is not what this post is all about. We were chatting about bikes with the dealer at the destination and he made a statement that took me back a step or two. He said that 90% of the motorcycle buyers buy without test driving the bike.

I had him repeat that since it seemed so incredible to me. Would you buy a bike without riding it?

I'm always working very diligently to discover the obvious.

Bought my 2013 V Star 1300 Deluxe without riding it. There was snow and ice on the ground with more falling when I made the deal. It had .2 miles on it.

Never test rode any of em except the Harley. Never an issue with the exception of the 1100 Yamaha. Certainly wouldn't have bought that one had I test rode it but other than that its never been an issue.

I've bought three now with no road test. I have sat on bikes, and immediately ruled them out, but have never test rode any bike. Sounds crazy I know but no regrets (yet).

I bought my Virago 250 from a guy before I knew how to ride. I had the seller ride it over to my house and drop it off. I couldn't ride it.

I rode the 650, the 950 and the 1300 before purchasing them. I never gave a thought to not test riding them before buying. I just took it for granted that was the norm ergo, my amazement at the dealers statement. Duh

Same here. Vic dealers are the only ones, and even then I'm familiar enough with those bikes where I wouldn't have a need. I do sit on them though to get an idea of the ergo's and balance.

I bought from two dealerships here and both of them let you ride the bikes. Maybe looking like you're 71 years old and very conservative helps set aside the fears that you are going to TEST RIDE it. (twist the throttle to the limit and stand it on one wheel) Lol

After riding the Boulevard, I'm glad that I did ride the V-Star.

Oh another note: The first dealership handed me the keys to the 650 and said, "See Ya". The dealership for the 950 let me ride it with an escort, the owner. He needed something to do. On the 1300 I rode the manager's 1300 Deluxe by myself.

I have been told that it is an "insurance issue" that they don't do test rides. Not sure if the cost to insure random riders is to expensive. I test drove all but my 1300 and 650 Kaw, seller did not offer, I asked.

I test drove my 93' Vulcan and my current 1100. But when I say test drove, I basically drove them up and down the street to make sure I could work all of the controls and could sit up comfortably. But I've also always bought my bikes from private parties. I don't like dealer sales.. Maybe one of these days I'll be in a position to buy a "brand new" bike.. But, I'd much rather pay 1/6th of the price and spent a little more to get it running good and have a nice bike with no monthly attachments.
