First mechanical issue...
Today's commute was bad. A normally 20 minute ride home took almost 2 hrs, stop and go (more stop than go) traffic almost the entire way. Finally got about 5 miles from home, traffic opened up, and I got up to about 60 mph...then the bike would not accelerate and lost power. I pulled off to the side. Bike would barely start & wouldn't stay running. I switched to reserve tank, and finally got it started. I'm only down 2 gallons in a 4.5 tank, so that's a little weird. Made it the rest of the way home, pulled in the driveway and stopped to open garage door. Went to pull the bike in, and it seemed a little hard to shift. Played with it a bit and bike was extremely hard to get into neutral ...it should not be that difficult.
As far as the losing power...could that be the battery, due to the length of time sitting/creeping in traffic? It was slooow going, as in, I was lucky if we moved enough to get into 2nd gear. It was basically a 1st gear/brake balancing act the majority of the way.
I'm sorry if my questions seem silly to some...I'm a new rider and just trying to get to know my bike and its quirks. This is the main reason I did NOT want to buy a used bike. However, the new bike I intended to buy, was bare bones. This bike (used) had everything on it I wanted, and was (obviously) much less $$$. But you take your chances with a used bike, I guess.
Anyone have any thoughts on where to start? I hooked up to the battery tender and will check tomorrow to see if it's just a battery issue. Will also fill up, even though I know it's got plenty of gas.
My ride is a 2006 Yamaha VS 650 Silverado.
I'm supposed to take it in Thursday to have a new front tire mounted, but now I'm a little nervous to take it very far. I don't want to breakdown and get "stuck" someplace. :/
