4,000 Mile Trip

4,000 Mile Tour - Wife and I just returned from a cross country tour. We do one every year on our motorcycle. This is the first year on the SVTC. We rode i temps fron 46 to 97, in rain and sun and up and down mountains. The SVTC was two up and pulling a loaded trailer. It ran perfect. The only issue I had was going into Wisconsin. we rode in a heavy rain for about 50 miles, the display screen showed an error "CAN - Communication Error". I clicked OK and a few seconds later the screen digitized and then rebooted. Never did it again and the motorcycle ran perfect . We ran on lots of highways, interstates and backroads all at about 5 MPH over posted limits. I'm happy with 34.5 MPG.
FYI,
I got some "cant detect the key fob" errors so I replaced the battery in the FOB, the bike did not recognize the FOB after that. I started to try and reprogram the bike/FOB but tried something first. I replaced the new battery with the other new battery and everything worked, changed them back and nothing. It looks like one of the new batteries was bad out of the package. No more key errors rest of trip.

The run flat tire I ended up with 4 plugs in still was losing about 2 psi a day so I had to watch that. Now that I am home, I'll take the wheel off and have it replaced/repaired without having to pay $200 labor to remove the wheel. Bike run fantastic, not one issue mechanically other than the occasional backfire coming off of idle that I have always had.

Wow Rob, quite a trip! Surprised you haven’t won the monthly mileage challenge for this.
Sure wish you had more pics and stories to share.
BTW, 34.5mpg riding 2 up loaded with loaded trailer is very acceptable mileage.

Gotta tell ya Tony, I was very pleased. The Goldwing sets a very high bar and this bike certainly passed with flying colors. I did "feel" the trailer more going uo the mountain than I did on the Wing but I am not sure that isn't the result of a 6 speed versus 5, either way it was not an issue. The SVTC performed superb. We did a couple of 500 mile days easily.

Glad to read that on this great trip, the SVTC performed well for you. We both had a 2008 GW, and it was a great bike in itself, but my wife and I have found that we really love the 'envelope' of a big V-Twin engine, especially the smooth 113, and so really don't 'buyer's regret' miss it. We are now totally into our SVTC. I'm in my late 60's...and being that our 2018 SVTC does everything we want of her...I said to my wife about a month ago...that this is probably my last motorcycle purchase. If I ever (the rest of my days...) find I need to do a rebuild due to ample miles upon her...I'll just rebuild. Same for bearings and frame maintenance.

My son doesn't know it yet...but when I can no longer manage her safely, I intend to have him come over on some pretense, and with needing a hand in the garage, have him come in the pedestrian door, and see the SVTC with a bow across her bow....and the ownership papers already transferred to him...on the seat....

Keep it in the family... He's more sport than tour...but I don't believe he would turn it down...lol!
