Unhappy Trip Odometer not working

I'm buying a '98 Royal Star (standard not Venture or TD) and I noticed on the test ride that the trip odometer doesn't work. What I mean is that the TRIP button above the speedo (on tank) doesn't do anything when I push it. The Odometer works but does not switch over to Trip. Any ideas why or suggestions. I don't know if it is the button, a fuse or loose connection. I don't have the bike home yet to play around with it. BTW it is a 1300 with 18k and in otherwise good condition. P.S. I'm buying it as is from a HD dealer.

Thanks in advance
Mike

As is

Could they yes, but they're a HD dealer and sell everything else as is. They will inspect it but that won't cause it to fail, so I'm on my own.

Trip meter button

The book says hold the trip meter button untill it says Trip. Wonder if you are not holding the button long enough.

You can read the owners manual on Star

Ok I figured out how to fix my trip odometer.
1. Remove 3 bolts holding on Chrome speedo cover.
2. Plug in Trip odo button wiring harness.
3. Test trip odo button.
4. Smile when it works.
5. Replace 3 bolts holding on Chrome speedo housing.
Done

Don't know why it was unplugged to begin with but it works now!

I love this bike!
