Gas tank help!

I just picked up an 05 Royal Star at the end of last season, and there's some things that just don't seem right. I'm getting about 140 miles per tank, and when I fill up from almost dead empty, the MOST I've ever been able to put in is between 3.5 - 4 gallons. I thought a 4 gallon tank was a little undersized for a bike like this, but what do I know! Then I looked up the specs, and they say it's supposed to have a 6 gallon tank! THAT makes more sense. But... I doubt I'm doing something wrong at the pump...so what gives?? Is there something tricky I don't know?? I'm used to big cruisers and tourers (last 2 bikes were a Goldwing and a Triumph Rocket III), and it's just a tad embarassing that the guys riding the bikes with the "peanut" tanks can go further than I can!
Any info at all would be greatly appreciated!!

well I know there is another fuel canister (behind the jugs, under the seat) that the fuel pump draws go-juice from but I'd be surprised if it holds the elusive 2-ish gallons from this little math problem.

I usually refill around 4 to 4 1/2gallons at 160 miles. I kinda figure reserve would be about a gallon?
