So I managed to figure it out exactly. The way that you have to position the wrench will largely influence the outcome. But it isn't just positioning over the bolt head. You need to position the wrench at an angle to be able to turn the bolt. The crank case was shaped to allow enough space to do this sort of work primarily with it standing straight up. Will include pictures later on the technique I noticed was required to do this. Hopefully this helps someone.
