1100 Classic "clank"

Got a noise that I'm hoping someone might be able to help with. Recently I notice a clanking sound when starting out in first. I seems to happen when letting clutch out and sounds like it's coming from the front driveshaft or clutch area. A few seconds later I sometimes hear a sound like small rocks rattling in the exhaust pipe (that's just a sound description - it sounds like it's coming from the same area). Once I get moving, I don't hear either noise. I should note that this spring I checked the mid shaft nut. It was tight and I buggered up the threads to keep it that way. There is some slight movement in the driveshaft (maybe a mm or 2). Is that too much? I'm thinking maybe I have a U joint going away? It only has 18,000 miles on it so I wouldn't think so but anything's possible in a 17 year old bike. Hoping to get some insight before I dig into it.
