Hose/tube replacement...lube?

I'm doing some work on a friend's bike (Honda Shadow) and I'm replacing a few hoses that feed to & from the carburetor. My question is a general one...

Because they fit so freak'n tight, what can I safely use to lube up the fittings so that I have an easier time getting them back on? Fuel runs through one of them, so I realize that I can't simply use anything, right?

What's safe to use?

I use Marvel Mystery Oil for nearly all lubrication needs (motorcycle related).

Really? I already have that...

Are there any downsides to using Vaseline?

Nope. It's a petroleum based product, and it doesn't take much at all to work.
