Angry Trouble starting when cold

I've read ton of threads similar but thought I'd throw this out there and see what ya'll think. I bought a 2007 RS 1700 late Dec. It has 17k miles on it but clearly sat for a while. (Air box was dirty, battery was dead, took while to crank up, backfired few times first 5 minutes I rode it) Since then it's been fine albeit it's cold in NC so I really have only ridden it a few times. But 3 times now I've had an impossible time getting it to crank. The motor turns over, fires up but sputters and chugs and very low idle for 20-30 seconds and then shuts off. Repeat 15 times until I get lucky and fires up nice and steady. No other problems. Once it's running it runs beautiful. (Full choke makes problem worse...in fact, I pretty much can't even use full choke. Most success comes from barely pulling choke out at all & then turning choke off after 30 seconds or so).

I have aftermarket straight pipes (no baffles) K&N air box (just cleaned) & new battery. Mechanic buddy suspects it was jetted already bc it would ride terrible otherwise.

Any suggestions / ideas would be awesome. So far I've been told to replace spark plugs & turn idle up a bit...which I will do tomorrow.

So I replaced spark plugs, didn't help.

I increased idle speed. That helped a bit.

I sprayed carb cleaner & starter fluid into the air box, that did the trick. Runs fine again.

That tells me the carbs need a good cleaning.

Thanks for help everyone.

Hmmm. Carb cleaning. How does one do that? I'm a first time rider with a 06 Roadie. Almost embarrassed to say I dont know where the carb is. Is it behind the air box?
