Question about a Cobra air filter install

Hi
I installed an aftermarket Cobra air filter on my 09 VStar 950.
Simple to install, bike works great. In the kit was a little note saying it's highly recommended to install a Cobra fuel management kit, about $500.00. as the engine may run lean.
Called the service dept of my Yamaha dealer and they say if the bike works fine don't bother.

Just curious, anyone done this, with or without the Fuel management kit?

Thanks
Cheers from chilly Nova Scotia

install your filter, remove plugs, note what they look like, reinstall plugs, ride 50 mi (80km-ish), pull plugs. If the plugs are completly white then its running too lean, black is too rich. I run my bike little lean (as does yamaha from the factory). I just pulled my plugs after installing them and riding 2000 miles and they have just a tint of white. Just the way I like them.
