Best setting for progressive shock

I'm getting ready to install a progressive shock on my V Star 1100 and wondered if anyone had suggestions for the Preload and rebound damping adjustments. It will be a lot easier to set those now, rather than after they are installed.

Are the factory settings generally good enough?

Most of my riding is one-up on city streets/hiways, to/from work, but I occasionally take a longer ride on country roads with my wife.
