How Worn Is Too Worn?

Well, it was time to replace the rear pads on the bike I just purchased and I was shocked when I saw how thin the pads were when I removed them. When I looked the bike over, I would have sworn there was more pad there, but my aging eyes have failed me once again. My concern is the disc rotor. It is still within spec (5.7mm vs 5.5mm min), but it has some grooving that worries me a bit. I'd appreciate a second opinion on whether replacement is necessary, or maybe it's just a good idea at this time. Replacement rotors aren't cheap, and it may be better to pick up a second hand one in better condition. Comments appreciated....

I would run it like it is. If it presents any undesirable characteristics with the new pads, then replace the rotor. Is it the rear or twin fronts? My roadstar rear pads weres down when I decided to peek at them. Glad I did! Rotor has some grooving to it as normal wear. It works, doesn't squeal, all is good.

looks like mine, the inspection mechanic said the grooving would not pass next time. so i put a new one on and pads the disc was $135.00 from boats.net.

If you can find the thickness of a new rotor, you can figure out from your odo how many more miles it will take to wear out that last 0.2mm

Ive never had a car fail inspection because they put calipers on the rotor and said they were worn too thin. On a motorcycle... they might. Usually car rotors start to flake off because they are clad with two layers of metal.

BTW, 0.2mm is the thickness of three sheets of paper.

I just googled the front rotor for my VS650..... YIKES!

mine are worse than yours, as long as they aren't warped giving you a pulsing lever or the brakes just don't feel right don't worry about it the new pads will seat in no time, i go by feel, if the brake doesn't feel right then i start looking for why, i also stick with oem semi metallics they may wear the rotor quicker than organics but rotors can be replaced my life can't, looking at your rotor where the pad doesn't rub at the top there really isn't that much of a lip there i would say you have a ways to go yet, as long as the pads didn't go metal to metal your good to go, no worries there ether

Thanks for the replies folks. After reading your notes, I went ahead and put the new pads on. So far so good. The test ride went well and I expect the rear brake to become even more effective as they seat in.
