a buddy charged his 81 Virago 750 brand new battery overnight with the bike hooked up and the charger clips on the wrong battery terminals. Now it is dead and will not charge or turn over. any thoughts on what he could have fried and how to start figuring it out?
he did check the fuses in the box on the forks and they were all fine.
I actually do not know but, I would guess the battery is the problem. It must have not been very good to start out and over night reversed would have to be pretty hard on it. I think the regulator and recatfier would protect the generator. If the key was off most of the other stuff would not have had Voltage on them.
I would try to supstitute a battery for a test. Maybe take his out and jump another one for a test. Hope the charger was not a very big one? If It was a small one I don't think you should be in much trouble.
Thanks Dave. Upon further inspection, he found a blown 20a fuse next to the battery, replaced it and was good to go. i sold him the bike a few months ago and was trying to help him out. a very good outcome considering what could have happened and a good lesson.
