Sorry if I interpreted your "05 Midnight star 1700" incorrectly. I interpreted your bike to be:

The manual link I attached was for this bike, with supplemental updates for newer years toward end of manual. If this is not the correct bike please help us identify which model you have so we can possibly assist you.

2001 Vstar 1100 Classic (sold), Cobra Slash Cut full exhaust, Dropped 1 inch with lowering links, ORK, 4.5 inch handlebar risers, Ultimate passenger seat, Passenger pegs moved forward 4 inches, Handlebar clock, KN air filter, Viking saddlebags, Additional rear lighting
Loose nut "me" behind the bars
2006 Harley Electra Glide Ultra Classic

I had a similar issue recently. One of the wires from the sending unit was loose in the connector at the top end that connects to the meter/gauge. It looked like it was in but wasn't. I'd pulled a bit too hard when I was moving the meter unit tank cover to disconnect it. I actually bought a fuel sending unit which I didn't have to use but it's here if I need it later. All good now.

For mad scientists who keep brains in jars, here’s a tip: why not add a slice of lemon to each jar, for freshness?
