New 08 Roadstar with Cobra pipes- backfiring!

Just bought my 08 roadstart on saturday. Shop had put cobra pipes on to dress it up. This thing is backfiring like crazy on deceleration, but guy's in the shop say there isn't anything they can do other than sell me a mapping program for $300. I've heard about removing the AIS but i don't think this is work i should do, nor do i think yamaha will remove something that is on there for emmisions. i've only had it 3 days! Can someone help!

Back fire or popping

Jay,

For what it is worth it seems most that install after market exhaust that open up the exhaust get some popping on deceleration. Some degree of this seems to be expected. If your dealer is going to change the map that leads me to think you may have an aftermarket fuel module also. If it is a Power Commander III USB some maps can be downloaded installed.

AIS, Air Injection System injects air into exhaust to burn off unburned gas. Removing it and plugging it will reduce popping and back fireing. your dealer may not want to remove it. This deals with the subject.

I do not do engine braking much I use the brakes.
Hope this helps some.

We also noticed some smoke coming from the pipes after we started it. could the fuel injection need some adjustment?

Smoke

Jay,

I can only guess about the smoke. I have never noticed it on my liner but that may not mean it is no there. A small amount of moisture might show up at first. You might just try riding the bike for a few days and see how things go.

The Maps they talked about are the only adjustments for the fuel injection that I know of. The map has to do with how much gas is injected at each throttle position. They do run a little rich for a few minutes untill warmed up.

Roadstars are a very reliable bike, not many have a problem. Of course there are always some. If you trust your dealer I would go with his opinion.

Dave

Did you have the shop put them on or did they do it before you bought it? If they did it before, they should fix it.

I do not think they can remove AIS even if they wanted to. EPA would be on them like stink ob S**t!

I had a 09 VStar 950 that I put Cobra Pipes on I let the dealer put the pipes on, when he did he also put in a Power Commander Fuel management System and I still had a problem with popping on decel with an occasional backfire, my dealers explanation, "Thats the way Cobra pipes are with a FI bike." The 950 does not have4 an AIS so maybe removing that will alleviate the problem on the R*.

I had this problem with my old bike and it was suggested that i use 87 octane fuel when i was useing 91 octane, i did change to the cheaper gas and the back fireing problem was solved.
Hope this may help out!

I heard that using 87 octane was most important on the 950.
