Smile Four Wheeled Conversion

I just finished converting my 1999 Roadstar to a "Quad" (four wheeled trike) by adding outrigger wheels that can be removed. This is my own design. Has anyone else done a Roadstar conversion of this type. I used the plans from a CD available on eBay.

It would be nice if there was a separate forum category for conversions.

Phil,
there isnt a section for conversions but there is a motorcycle modification section in the forum. I think we could probably use a TRIKE section though. Im not ready for a trike just yet but im sure that day will come. I would rather ride a trike than not ride at all.

Voyager kit

Phil,

You probably know there is a commercial kit for this. A Voyager kit adds two wheels in the rear. A spring tension adjusts the weight on the origional wheel that is the drive.

I have a friend that has one on a Harley. He is happy with it.

What wheels and spindles did you use? I saw a factory one, It was way too expensive. Didn't look like anything that I couldn't make myself. What does the conversion weight.

I used 13 inch wheels (24 inch outside diameter) on a 1 inch hub. The entire outrigger assembly weighed 164 lbs. It cost me about $1500 to build of which $800 was welding. CD is on eBay and Craigslist. I couldn't justify buying a commercial kit for $4000 to $6000 to put on an eleven year old Roadstar (which I love). Takes about 10 to 15 minutes to undo six bolts. I absolutely love the quad for camping but I love the basic bike for the twisties.

Thanks for that info, I have welded plenty of spindles on for friends to build trailers. I have a 1953 Sidecar that I may attach to my bike, It is lighter, but I do like the four wheel set up. I saw one in a shop and told the owner that I could build one easily. I thought the wheels looked like boat trailer wheels. In around 1970 a neighbor bought a mini bike for his daughter, she was 5 yrs old. I made it into a four wheeler. The weight of yours is OK for my Bike. THANKS

There is a company making a four wheel trike kit for Road Stars and cost about $3300.00. The company is Insta Trike. I downloaded the manual just to see how it was made. I did work in metal fab shop and I figured it would cost about $600.00-700.00 to make. That is me doing all the work. I have all the tools I need at my house to make. Looks to be an easy build and It can be taking off to go back to two wheels in 5 minutes. Not the Voyager kit hassle either. Just google it to find manual or email me for manual. I have a 2000 Ultra Star Conversion on my Road Star with Audiovox CCS-100 Cruise Control. I have manual I wrote for cruise control mod also.
