Old, low mile Road Star

I recently bought a 2013 Suzuki C50 and have pretty much decided that I want a bike with better Interstate performance. I like the C50, just worry about the longevity of the motor.

So I have located a 2004 Road Star with around 2500 miles on it. Have not seen it in person yet, but I think the bike would meet my needs. Of course, I am worried about rubber components like tires and the belt, but what else should I be concerned with?

Tires may need replacing especially with the amount of time the bike has been sitting. I personally would replace the tires. The belts usually last a long time. I have 60k on one of my bikes and the belt still looks great. The biggest issue with the 04s(first year of the 1700) is a number of bikes developed sticky valves(Google-Yamaha roadstar sticky valve syndrome). Yamaha's solution was to only put 4 quarts of oil in the bike and run ring free if you have the symptoms. This solved the problem for some. Some had to ream the valve guides to fix the problem. I have a buddy that had an 04 that never got it right. Doesn't mean the one you're looking at has the problem, but it is a concern. Good luck!

Thanks very much! The sticky valve thing is very good info and I would not have suspected that.

You should run the vin# by a Yamaha dealer..... because some of the early models have a transmission recall.

from what I see online is if the vin# on the neck has a DOT above it then the recall has been done?

Stumbled upon on 07 Road Star while looking at the one mentioned above. Fairly low miles and in fairly good shape and the money works. One thing I had not considered is that these bikes utilize a carburetor rather than fuel injection. Any major concerns with that?

99-03 was the tranny recall, so 04 and up are good. 99-07 are the carbureted bikes which is just old technology. When you change the air filter, pipes, manifold then start dialing in the carb, it's a bit of a challenge at times to get things right. If you're leaving things stock or just changing pipes you don't have to mess with the carb (usually). My next bike will be fuel injected, but I currently have two 03 roadstars that run great and are problem free with very little maintenance. If the price was right, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one. Sounds like you're doing the right research. Good luck!

I've had my 2005 R* for about 2 years now. Found it on CL with only 5400 miles on it. After 15,000 miles I've had no mechanical issues with it. The only problem I occasionally have had was sitting in traffic. It doesn't like that much. The fuel seems to get hot and she runs a bit rough. Now I either shut it down while waiting or find a better route. You're gonna love the torque this bike has.

Had a C50 a few bikes back . My current ride is a 2013 Road Star . The Road Star is sooo much better on the highway .

Well, got to look at and ride the Road Star today and to say I am impressed would be an understatement. Not just the additional power over the C50, but the transmission was so much smoother!

One problem ... way too loud for these old ears. The pipes are Cobras with no baffeling at all. I know that I can buy baffles for them, but I am hoping someone out there can tell me if it will make a real difference in volume? I won't pull the trigger on the deal until I figure that out.

Thanks to all of you who have shared thoughts and opinions with me. It really helps a great deal.
