Help!!!

Hello all,

Only had my bike for this season...I just noticed a leak and wondering if anyone else has had this problem and how to fix is..While sitting on the bike it would be the left side and it appears to be dripping on to and then running down what I am guessing is the gear cover (The fancy round cover on lower left side)... Any idea what it could be or what I should be looking for? Maybe this is common but mine just started doing it recently..

Any help or advice would be helpful, thanks in advance.

Ill have to get some better pics but its a 2001 Road Star....I have read on some other places that the nut to the drive shaft pulley could be loose...Any idea how to check and fix that if so?

Looks like its dripping from above and landing on the pulley/transfer cover (the cover in the lower right hand corner of attached pic)

You can get to the front pulley nut by removing that cover(wagon wheel looking piece). Inspect the lock washer as this is a problem with the nut becoming loose. Replace that lock washer. The nut should be torqued to I believe 61 ft/lbs. Check for oil inside that area and on the belt. If present you might have a damaged seal. Can you tell if it's gear or engine oil? It sounds like the leak is coming from somewhere else. Do you have the stock air cleaner or aftermarket.

How does the wagon wheel cover come off? Is it twist off or is there like a snap ring or something holding it in (not currently looking at the bike)? I wasn't sure what was behind it so haven't really looked to take it off. I was also planning to remove the plastic paint matched covers above there to see if its something behind there...I will prob work on it tonight after work.

The bike has aftermarket pipes and air intake on it.. I am not sure which type of oil it is.

You're going to remove the whole pulley cover. As you face it, there is a plate with four bolts holding it to the swing arm to the right side. Remove those bolts and then the two bolts on the left side and then you can remove the front pulley cover.

I'm still not following where the leak is originating. I would first check the rear cylinder head. On the right side of the bike look at the top of the rear cylinder head. There is a hose on top towards the front of the rear head. Trace that hose and see where it ends, and if it's attached to anything. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the help...I just posted a new thread with some questions before I attempt to fix the pulley nut since that is now the confirmed diagnoses.. Anyone who has done this please look over my questions and try to help me with the info I need..
