2003 Road Star Value?

Hello all!

I'm going to be looking at a 2003 Road Star with 7k on the clock.

I know what NADA and KBB say the retail value is, but I'm looking for more opinions.

What do you all think the bike is worth? It's stock.

About $4k around here (Milwaukee-Madison, WI) and I'd actually be more than a little concerned about the mileage being that low. It's 10 years old with only 7k miles on it, so that's 700 miles a year. So in a year's time, he only runs it enough to put maybe 4 or 5 tanks of gas through it. Sticky Valve Syndrome plagued the early 1600 Roadstars so if you buy it make sure you run Seafoam, MMO or Yamaha's version of them (it's a new product and the name escapes me at the moment) in the fuel every few tanks. Deposits in the fuel system can be an issue from long-stored or seldom used bikes, as well as corrosion in the engine from condensation from the oil rarely being kept good & hot for any length of time. That's an air cooled engine, it's not supposed to be cool all the time.

That being said, the Roadstar engine has a very stout motor and is known to be a 100k mile engine all day long with routine maintenance. Oil changes are critical for that so make sure the oil looks used, but not filthy & go through the bike like any other 10 year old used bike.

Look at the VIN stamped on the neck of the frame. If there is no punch mark near the numbers (it would be just a single dot) the 4th gear pinion factory recall may not have been done. That's actually a good thing since it's a free rebuild of your top end and complete transmission tear down on Yamaha's dime. All 2003 & older Roadstars were put under the recall. If you aren't sure, PM me the bike's VIN & I'll run it at work (I work at a Yamaha dealership).

Use SearchTempest.com to look for Roadstars in your area & see what others are asking in neighboring cities. I use it at work for pricing research as well as eBay. Between the 2 of them you can get a pretty good idea what bikes are worth in real world prices, not just what the book says.

Liquid Silver & Cobalt Blue 2006 Roadstar spoke with a ton of cool goodies.
