Lost my key.

I could wire in a bypass-switch and hide it.

I would pay a locksmith, if they could do it.

I could (although I don't want to) replace the lock cylinder and gas cap lock and side compartment lock, from what I gather.

But I can't take not riding.

Any helpful suggestions?

Here's a post from last year talking about same thing.

This is one time that eBay was the best solution for me.

You know you will find the key after you get it fixed, at least that was my luck.

Did you try taking your serial number to a dealer and getting the key code? If you have that you can get one at any locksmith.

Googled Yamaha Dealer in my area, got a guy who when asked "are you a Yamaha dealer?" responded with "We can get you parts!" Then tried to sell me a new lock cylinder...

Tried all the local locksmiths, everyone said it was PITA and or couldn't be done, except for one fellow.

He was here till 9:30 or later working in tandem with some fellow he is partners with over the phone. Using the gas tank lid as his reference for the lock.

Finally tell him, "Hey man, get you some rest and a meal ( he wouldn't take the tacos my family offered him, he was trying to make something happen with that lock; working hard) and come back when you get to it in the morning."

Quoted me on the far side at the same price as buying a new cylinder and keys from amazon.

So this fellow has sank some time and effort in this, although no resolution, and in the process of cleaning up the job to call it at night, lost a bearing from the gas tank lid. He said "i'll find it or I'll replace it".

My "problem" now, is that my wife found the key under the washing machine this morning...

I feel like I cant let this guy get outta here without putting some money in his hand for his effort, even if he didn't or couldn't get it done, he's the only guy who would take the job.

And there is still the issue with the tank-lid bearing to rectify.

My cousin from NYC would say "we need to square up with the locksmith"

you know from other sources these locks are hard to work on, but the guy was still willing to take a shot at it

when these threads come up its a good time for everyone who has only one key for their motorcycle, to goto Walmart and have another one made,
because $5 now vs days of grief....

It happens to me ON THE ROAD. When I have some lightining idea to look to the key and I don't see it, I almost have a heart attack. The bike will run, but I was afraided if I need to switch off.

When I arrived at my house, I take the step key and switch off the electricals. It was the moment to buy one of these pretty keys for V-Star at the Aliexpress.
The key arrives to me yesterday, and I'll take to the locksmith to make a copy (for emergencies).

He put the cap back together with the bearing replaced; then made me a duplicate.

Asked how much for the spare key, he said $20.

Said "okay" and let him finish closing up shop.

Gave him $40... Good guy and to find out he lives 2 blocks away.

He tried to give it back and I told him how he was the only guy to take the job and that I think he earned it.

Bout to go pick up some tools from a yard sale...

ON MY BIKE.

You have inspired me to get a 3rd key for both my bikes this weekend

years ago I jumped out of my car at a thruway rest stop, with the engine running and the AC on, and by force of habit I hit the lock on the drivers door as I stepped out and closed the door..
on the way to a job interview

Fortunately I had tossed my suit jacket in the back seat when I left the house, and did not lock that door

But from that close call, ever since, I have carried a spare key for my primary car, with the plastic knob ground off, in my wallet.

I have not done that for my MCs yet. There have a been few times away from home where I dropped my MC key after getting off the bike, missed my pocket, or dropped it opening the door at work. So far I have always found it again, or someone picked it up and knew it had to be mine... I have two keys for both bikes, but I dont want to make that phone call 'Honey...can you get the other key for my motorcycle and drive here..."

so... 3rd flatten keys go in my wallet tomorrow.

Maybe your bit of grief over your lost key will inspire more of us: April 13th is officially now "make a spare key for your ride" day!

I was looking at the keys for my 650 and royal star, they are almost identical

im wondering, my house key only goes in the lock one way (flat on one side)
but the motorcycle keys are symmetrical. You can put them in the lock either way...

Does anyone know if the lock tumbler uses both sides of the key, or are there only pins on one side?

Because if the locks only use one side... I could have a key made with the 650 profile on one side, and the Royal star profile on the other side, and as long as I knew which side was up for which bike

I would only need one key for both bikes.... !!!
