2004 XVS650 Afterfire/Backfire through carb

I'm having issues with the 2004 V-Star 650 Classic I just bought for a really good deal. 25k miles, Ran fine with no pops, backfires, hesitation or stuttering for about a week. Put away for the night after riding and went to start the next day: had crank but no spark.
Diagnosed the issue as the pickup coil as it tested way under spec via multimeter, after testing entire ignition system.
Ordered a new pickup coil/stator assembly from Electrosport (ESG652) since the pickup coil and stator are sold as one unit and claimed to be better than OEM.

Status: Put it all back together and it started right up, but the issue is that once it warms up it now
- backfires/pops at idle through the front cylinder exhaust and occasionally front cylinder carbs.
-Idle is unsteady and speeds up and slows down randomly.

Notes:
-When backfire/popping occurs lights get brighter or dim.
- Carb boots slightly cracked, sprayed brake fluid on them but made no difference. All vacuum lines have checked out, exhaust checks out as well.
- has fire in both cylinders, new spark plugs are gapped to spec but look sooty and black?

My instinct is telling me it's that aftermarket stator(Electrosport ESG652) is the problem, as some threads have claimed it can sometimes be problematic and cause similar issues.

Only other ideas are timing, valves, and carburetor.
I'm out of ideas. I'm a newbie when it comes to bikes and any help would be much appreciated before I end up taking it to a shop and potentially getting screwed on repair costs. Like I said, it ran fine before the pickup coil/stator replacement.

I am not the best for this but does it do it all the time? If the lights brighten and dim that sounds like a voltage regulator. I am not versed on the coil or stator. I find it unlikely that carb issue happened at the same time. Have you ever the lights dim any other time. I just replaced my regulator. Before it went i could see the speedo light vary at night. I have an 1100. If it happens all the time you can take the battery cover off and put a volt meter on it if at idle it is jumping over 15 volts regulator is bad. I am sure people with more knowledge will be here to help. Good luck let us know what you find.

The battery voltage is not jumping over 15v, however the voltage is jumping around to random points between 11 and 13 sometimes 14 as the backfires/popping is happening. I'm still voting either stator or regulator. Thanks for the suggestion, let me know if you have any other advice!

My guess would be the aftermarket stator. OEM may cost a little more, but it might be the better choice. Not sure if it could be your regulator/rectifier, but that is a known issue with VStar 1100s. I'm not sure about the 650. When mine went I had similar symptoms as Deek, with my headlight flickering momentarily. When it finally kicked the bucket I lost all electrical power and it cooked my battery. I could've gotten a cheap one off eBay for $30 but I was warned to go OEM and I never had another issue up until I sold it.

I got lucky mine just stopped charging. I did the diode checks and they tested positive even though it was bad. When i got the new regulator and took the old back out again i saw signs ove overheating on the back.

It definitely sounds like the regulator is bad. regulator is a hellova lot cheeaper and easier. Not counting out the stator. The stator could have fried regulator. But it could have been a regulator all a long.
