New rider questions

Hi, I'm new to riding. I fooled around on a 1980 suzuki 850 bout 10 years ago but never any street time. Anyway I bought a 99 650 v star classic and totally love the bike. As a larger guy ( 6'2 260lbs) I was a little wary of the 650 but it still seems to have some jam. My question is whether or not a maxair kit will make a noticeable difference after I get accustomed to the 650 and want some more power.

your about the same size and i am and i ride a v star 650 only mine is a 2006...it's got enough to do all I want with it without any changes..I also have a 1300 but it is no bike for town riding..heavy and too much shifting..the 1300 is made for open road riding..my opinion's only

I'm 6'4" and 255 with a 2003 650 classic and it gets me up and down the road just fine with plenty of throttle left on the open road trips.

new rider questions answered

Thanks for the replys guys. Your comments are appreciated, I figured the bike would be fine but I still wanted other opinions. I took a ride on a honda 650 years ago and it didn't feel nearly as powerful as my V-Star.

i have 2000 vstar 1100 custom. I am 250 lbs and get around on it ok. i am also only one year on the bike and learning. I just had a BAK and cobra slip ons added and they do incease resoponsiveness and sound. it sounds like you are going to be ok with your bike, based on yours and others experiences/comments, it really is important for you to feel comfortable with your bike and it sounds like it is working good for you. Glad you enjoy your bike, ride safely.

Max air

NewVstar,

To your question about Max Air. I believe to see a change you need to open up the air flow throught the engine. This means Max air or equivalent, and exhaust. This will then mean you need to re-jet the carbs to get fuel air back in range. I believe this will gain you about 10%. So you be the judge. Ride for a while and make up your mind. Some decide they just want loud mufflers, but no real change in prformance. If you do it all and have it done you are talking some serious money.

I can't comment on the performance gains on a 650. But on my 1100 by going with the Maxair, air removal and some straight pipes. The dyno run showed 68 hp. According to the dyno operator that is up from 54hp on a stock 1100. Total cost less labor was (are you sitting down) $750. No tuning was done on the dyno, my dealer was letting guys run their bikes on the dyno during a promotion.
