950 Rear Shock Adjustment

Just wondering if anyone has adjusted the rear shock on the 950. My 950 (not tourer model) was set on the fourth notch. I am going on a trip to Gettysburg this summer on the Lincoln Highway (about 450 miles one way). I got a luggage rack put on and a 19.5x19.5x11.5 luggage piece. So, a good size luggage. My wife weights about 135 (make sure she doesn't see that number). I adjusted the shock to 6th notch to compensate for the additional weight. Was wandering if I should go another notch. Anyone got ideas.

How do you adjust shocks?

Springs

You are actually adjusting the rear springs. If you look at the shock you will see. Assuming you have an older model V star. Some of the newer bikes like the 950 & Liner have a single spring under the swing arm and you adjust it there. The wrench probably came with the bike.

LinerDave,

It looks like you got a 950 Tourer in the picture loaded down. What was the rear spring setting on our bike from factory? Was it on the 4th notch or on a higher setting?

Thanks,

Suds

PS: Thanks for the correction that it is actually the spring adjustment not the shock.

Bike

Suds,

Tough to tell in the small picture and most of the new models look a lot alike but my bike is a Stratoliner.

It has a single shock and spring under the swing arm. I have not changed it. I have been thinking of tightening it a little. When wife and I both get aboard the head light comes up a little.

Don't even be concerned about asking a wrong question. We are here to learn.
