650 petcock

Just bought an o4 650 v star today and was wondering, on the fuel petcock lever, one end is long one end is short which end do I use when turning fuel off, on ,res, and do you have to turn it off when not in use for a couple of days
Thanks

Fuel lever

Suzy,

Have seen this question often. Some models have a small arrow molded into the lever if you look close. If not the fact that one end will never point at the Off position should clear it up for you. The end that will allow you to point it at off is the end you go by.

There was a recant post on this topic that someone posted a picture of the valve close up showing the arrow. You might find it if you look through some old posts.

It's a good habit to shut the petcock off after riding. The fuel tank is above the carbs and can overflow them spilling gas creating a fire hazard.
