Estimate RPM's

Quick question riders...

I am on a 09 VStar 1100 Siverado, love my new ride but it is the first bike I have owned that does not have a tach.

Is there a way to "guesstimate" what RPM I am at based on speed and gear?

Thanks in advance,

Well the idle should be set to 1000rpm and the redline is somewhere around 7500 iirc, so once you know what the max speed per gear is, you can make a rough guess at what revs are at a certain speed (assuming revs per gear = speed, being constant)

e.g. 1st gear takes me from 0 to 45mph at rev limit. So if I'm doing 30mph in first, then the engine should be at approx 4500 revs (idle speed of 1000rpm in first gear will get you about 5mph)

It can be calculated accurately. Exactly what speeds would you like to know the rpm? Can you measure the circumference of the rear wheel and relay that back to me. Either mm or inches is fine. You can measure around the tire center with a tape or mark a vertical line on the side of the tire and ground, rotate exactly one full turn, mark the ground and measure the distance between those two scribed lines.

Yeah it sounds like it is quite complicated. It is not a crucial more of a curiousity.

Thanks for the replies!!

im in the same boat always had a tach, and it was a bit of a problem while stopped next to harley's, i couldn't hear my engine and didn't know quite when to shift! This wasn't a huge deal, easily worked around. But then i got some pipes, haven't had problems since

Yes this is the kind of quick calculation I was looking for.

I do have new pipes on order and I can't wait!

Depends on gear too, i.e. you could do 60mph in any gear except 1st, but each one will have very different revs at 60
