weird starting problem with my 1100

I've been experiencing a rather strange starting issue with my '07 1100 classic for the past few weeks. This usually occurs after I take it out of for a lengthy ride (100+ mi), and usually in cold weather. Basically after I kill the engine, if I try to start the bike up within the next half-hour, it just tries to start and doesn't make it. I have to hold down the starter and twist the throttle just to get the gas flowing, and then when it does start (it sounds fine) when I try to accelerate in first it immediately sounds like it's going to stall, barely running, and then picks itself up out of it and runs fine.

Any ideas what this is or how to fix it? The engine is stock and I had an oil change about 3,000 miles ago.

You know what? I'm probably way the hell out of line but, My '09 Classic did not like the cold Seattle weather. I had several weird starting problems. I just lived wth it. I moved to the warmer climate ( Las Vegas ) and have not had the problem. maybe it's like - my artheritis doesn't hurt as bad down here.

Tps

Bruce,

Try checking the Throttle position sensor. I understand you should not give a V Star any gas to start as it may advance the timming.

A little more info please. Go thru your starting procedure step by step.. What do your plugs look like? How long of a ride before shut down, is that the 100mi ref? Do you use choke/enrichener? Does it help? How long has bike sat without running?

+1 on not touching the throttle on start-up with these bikes, you can damage your starter/mechanism.

I'm not sure what you mean by my plugs, but its usually after I ride between Orlando and Gainesville, so about 120 miles overall, and most of that ride is done at about 70 - 80 mph. Generally the bike will sit for about an half hour to an hour before I try to start it back up. I don't let the bike sit for more than a day, ever really. And I do use a choke, if it's giving me that problem I'll open it up all the way and re-try.

And it doesn't do this every time, either.

also, about the starter/mechanism, how would I know if I've already damaged it, since I've used that method about a half dozen times to get the bike started, maybe more. And if I have damaged it, is it expensive to fix/replace?

I meant what color are the sparkplugs, specifically the ceramic surrounding the electrode. I guess the first determination is whether it is a spark or fuel problem. Does it ever backfire out the exhaust when this non-starting event occurs? The next time this happens pull your sparkplugs immediately and check to see if you have spark. A long hot ride followed by a heat soak, as you described your ride. This could show up as a pick-up coil going bad or possibly a fuel vapor lock.

What happens is the timing gets advanced while the engine RPM is low. This can cause the engine to kick back damaging the starter (the case bolts twist). This causes a mis-alignment internal to the starter and can cause premature failure. This can also cause damage to the Starter Clutch (one way drive clutch that engages starter to engine). This was more a problem with pre-2003 (part upgrade) but can still be a problem with later yrs. At the Dealer starter replacement alone can be $600. Aftermarket Starters are about $150-200 with DIY labor. Starter Clutch involves splitting side case off and parts are $500-600, I think (haven't had to do this myself).
