2001 v star 650 rear lowering

i got the spring compressed sooooo how do i get the shaft to set still so i can un screw the head and replace it with the new one.. i used vise grips and no good it keep spinng

if the 650 is anything like the 1100 then there is no unscrewing to be done. you need to compress the spring enough so that the plate at the "bottom" of the shock becomes loose. this plate is what the spring rests against. this plate should have a slot in one side so that if you can move it enough you should be able to slide it out the side of the shaft of the shock then slide the spring over the bottom of the shock.
