Whirring noise

I just picked up a low mileage, 6500 miles, 05 Vstar 650. It runs great but has a fairly loud whirring sound that appears to be clutch/transmission related. The noise is noticeable in all gears. If I pull in on the clutch it immediately goes away.
Any ideas on what it might be?

I'd stop riding it and have a look at the drive train. This sounds like the mid shaft might be loose or is just about ready to give up the ghost. In any case, have a look at that before you ride the bike again. Others might have better insight on this and should offer their POV on this soon.

Is this common to the 650 as well as the 1100

I did some research and found links to the middle shaft nut coming loose being an issue with the 1100. Is it also an issue with the 650? It appears that you can inspect the nut on the middle shaft through the speedo sensor hole. Where is this hole located on a 650?
