Checking valves

I am checking my valve clearance for the first time, and first bike. I follow it all except I am unsure of the pointer "D" on the "magneto cover" as indicated on the bottom picture. I see a T1 through the timing plug hole for the rear cylinder, but I do not see where in that hole is it suppose to align, such as the detent "D". I am assuming, that this hole is what the book is referring to as the "magneto cover"?! I didn't think that they used magnetos for a long time, I would have thought that they would have a more exact term. My timing hole is round, with no marks on the hole to align the T line with.
