What did I break

2009 V-Star 1100, 48k miles, never had any mechanical problems. I was shifting from 1 to 2 and heard/felt a crunch/clatter from the left side near my foot. Immediate high revs and loss of propulsion.
After that the bike stopped going, like the clutch was disengaged.
If I released the clutch I could feel a small amount of pull, enough to get the bike barely moving on level ground. You could easily rev it up with no increase in "pull".
No more clattering noises with the clutch in or out. Clutch lever pressure was the same.
The engine seemed to be running the same.
You could also shift through the gears although the seemed "softer" than usual.
Put it on a trailer and brought it home.

What busted? Clutch? Drive shaft gears? Tranny?

Thanks,

Jim

:( Sounds expensive :( Is it still using the original clutch?

Once you remove the left side cover to check the mid shaft retaining nut and if you find it in place and torqued, I would suggest that you keep going on the drive system. This may involve you taking the rear wheel assy off to check the drive shaft. I'm attaching a post from one of our members that had a similar issue with his bike.
