Actual pictures of a failed V-Star starter clutch!
I've been researching this topic for the last 3-4 weeks ever since this used 07 V-Star 1100 followed me home. The day after I got it, it started the dreaded starter spinning but no engine turn-over.
The thing I have not seen, is a pic of the actual failed part. I pulled the engine apart per the manual and online write-ups. I tested the starter clutch per those documents as well.
I was pretty mad at myself for assuming it was the starter clutch and not trying a new battery and more testing on the actual starter FIRST.
Then, because I like to take stuff apart, I took another look at the one-way bearing and noticed one of the sprags was hanging at a funny angle. I took the mounting bolts out and this is what I found on the Front (closest to left engine cover) face of the bearing:
I'm fairly certain that's supposed to be perfectly round. Here's a closeup that pretty well proves this is the problem with my starter:
I'd comment on the poor design of this part... but when you think about the fact that this came from the same guys who decided to put the oil filter behind an exhaust pipe, hide the spark plugs, and put clamps on pipes at just stupid angles, it all starts to make sense.
