'02 Star 1100 kick out

Hey all,
I have an '02 Classic, just over 22k miles. Just changed the oil and filter less than 1k miles ago (Shell Rotella T 15w-40). I'm merrily riding this morning (about 70 degrees), and after 35 miles the bike acts as though it just shifted to neutral. I shift down to 3rd, back up to 5th, and it's fine for a half mile. repeat process two more times within next mile or so and I stop at my work. Engine oil level was fine, at least when I checked it upon stopping. Ideas and suggestions please!

I'll check that fluid and spline ASAP. However, and I feel like a novice by admitting this (3rd bike), I checked the throttle cable on the way home and it was loose as an 3XL shirt on an infant. I'm hopeful this is the end of that issue. Thnx greenMTNrider!
