slash cut stock exhaust doesn't have enough bark

Alright so I posted this in the exhaust forum and haven't got any response so I'll try here. I've got a 04 V star 1100 that I had done the hole saw mod to and I thought it sounded great , just enough bark but not too loud on the highway. I'm not a big fan of the look though so I made a 25 deg slash cut back from where the cone starts, the cut ends about an inch from the end of the first baffle , my problem is now the bark is gone and I've lost some bottom end power as well. Removing the end cone must have freed up the exhaust enough for the loss of power but I would have thought It would be louder and not quieter.
Has anyone modified the main baffle ever and what were the resuLts.
I tried it without the main baffle and it sounded awesome at idle but completely garbage and ridiculously loud while riding

Also I noticed at the beginning of the main baffle pipe there's a white filter in it, does anyone know what that is and it's purpose?
