Chasing a no start problem

Ok, here is whats going on. Bike ran great stopped to get gas and the bike was DEAD, not even a light lit. replaced the battery and now the following issue is the problem.

1. Press start button and get a fast clicking buzzing sound from starter relay.
So I, replaced Relay, and new battery

Now I press start button and still get clicking from relay. It seems when I press the starter button the battery gets drained pretty quick. I can only press it 2-3 times for about 3 seconds before there is not enough juice left.

When I send direct power to the starter the bike turns over.

Could a rectifier cause the relay to click and not engage.

I did check the ground to the engine and it is clean. There is another ground wire (smaller) that branches off of the large ground and goes to a white plug. I am not sure where the other end goes. Seems to run into the wiring harness and vanishes.

2000 Yamaha V-star 1100.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have a copy of the manual? Pages 7-13 and 7-14 show the circuit from the online copy floating around. It's a pretty simple circuit but I have no clue what your experience level is with electrical troubleshooting.
