Altitude with Slip ons

2002 Vstar 650 classic

Having a starting issue, and low MPG, need to know where to look to help.

Will not high idle, will die out and have to push choke in and keep throttle turned to keep running until warmed up just a bit (maybe 10-15 sec)

Rode 200 miles yesterday averaged 38 MPG on mainly straight and flat roads. PMS screws at 2.75 turns.

Rode in Big Horn mountains at 2.25 turns and averaged 51 MPG.

Only modification i have is Cobra Slip ons...

Valves have been set, carbs cleaned twice, new oil change/filter full rear lube etc etc etc...

read over the 650ccd website and cobra slash cuts show 3.5 turns with different jets... also, i am at 4600 ft. help.

If the carbs have been cleaned twice....what are the odds something didn't get put back in the right spot? Did you also clean the tiny side holes in the pilot jets? I ride at that altitude constantly with no issues. Just putting on different mufflers won't have but a minuscule change in performance so I doubt that is the problem. Also keep in mind that there are lots of variables outside the bike that can contribute to poor mileage.

The bike originally came with the slip ons, i didnt notice until someone pointed them out (first bike). I would agree with you on the carbs being put back incorrectly, but that was prior to my big horn mountain ride. The only adjustment i made since then was a PMS adjust because it is having a heck of a time starting cold and doesnt high idle.

Biggest difference was speed. This last trip i took was at 75-80 the whole way, where as the big horns was maybe 65-70. Could 10 mph really change the mpg that severely?

Didnt fill up after i got home from the ride, but on the way home MPG average was 31... I dont know what to do. Plugs look fine, resynced the carbs this morning and they were off by just a smidge... bleh... time to look at fuel injected i think. Tired of dealing with carb stuff.

As a sub-liter bike, the V Star 950 is a fine bike to barter for.

Pretty sure that i would step up into a much higher bike... 1500+. In less than a month i had outgrown the 650, thats as a brand new never ridden greenie...

Its a great bike but the features its lacking disappoint me now. I have new appreciation for fairings, radio, gas gauge, better seat, cruise control, fuel injection...

Pretty certain the next bike is going to be a full fairing cruiser with gobs more power.
