V Star 1100 speedometer problem

I am a relatively new owner of a 2006 V Star 1100 Classic. My problem is that when I first start out on a ride and the engine is cold, my speedometer reads low. When I am really doing about 50-60 mph my speedometer is reading under 30 mph. After about 10 miles it works its way up to the correct speed reading and is good for the ride, even with stops to eat or shop. Any ideas about what may be going on or where I might look?

I'd take the speed sensor out and have a look at it and clean it. They sometimes get dirty. And since your going to be there, have a look at the sensor wheel to see if it's dirty. The last thing you could check while you're there is the mid shaft nut for security. Has nothing to do with the speedo but you see it.

Thanks for the reply. Can you recommend a good Manual for the V Star 1100? I have not had it long and do not have anything.

I found this for around $10.00. Once you pruchase & download you can print or install it on your phone. I got one for my 07 v star 1100 custom & 01 suzuki vz800.

lol...... thanks. We do kind of need to keep the fact that the manual is there kind of under wraps for obvious reasons. We've already lost access to the others we had in there. Just an fyi.....

Oops... Sorry Mick, didn't realize it was an issue. Want me to stop mentioning the link to noobs? I _DID_ go out and buy a Clymer on the side

Feel free to direct them there...... I usually just mention that if they look at the new owners page they may find a "surprise".....lol. That way it keeps the search engines from finding it too easily.
