Speedometer / Instruments assembly

I'm looking to rip off the original rubbish that usually sits atop the tank and replace it with a more sleek looking alloy plate, curved around the tank, about the same size, but held up off it about 8mm with spacers / washers. Just for a more basic, plain look.

I was wondering if anyone else has already done something like this here and could recommend how to start going about this little project?

'99 XVS 650 Classic.

XVS 650 custom rear end and seats
Aftermarket flashers
Gothic style Z bars
Cobra Slash-Cut Drag Pipes wrapped in black
122.5 main jets, needle at 5th shim.
K&N pod filters placed directly onto carbs
Mixture screws at stock positions
Custom front mudguard (New one is being painted however)
Brand new ignition coils and NGK resistor caps
Yamaha YZF-R1000 right-hand calliper.
