Vstar 650 - Battery drains if bike is stuck in traffic
I picked up a Vstar 650 for my father a few months back.
It's a 2001 with around 70k kms on it.
Anyway it had a bad diff when I bought it. Fixed that, new tires and started riding it.
First ride before my father took it over was from North GA to the bottom of Florida.
The bike ran great but somewhere in the South of Atlanta there was a wreck on the highway and I was stuck idling and barely moving for an hour.
After an hour I had moved not even a mile so I pulled over to the side to drink some water and check my phone. Shut the bike off.
When I went to restart it, the battery was dead.
A good samaritan gave me a jump in with his semi truck. After this I rode to an Autozone, let the bike idle in the lot and bought a car battery along with jumper cables. I figured if the stator was on its way out I could rely on this big car battery to get me to Florida.
Anyway to my surprise, with the traffic now gone, the bikes battery charged back up on its own 10 hours later I arrived in South Florida with a fully charged battery.
I read up on here that the culprit could be the little heater elements on the carbs sucking up too much power at idle so the bike being in Florida, I pulled the fuse off and did not put it back on.
I returned the car battery and cable(that I never had to use) and rode the bike down there for a whole week without problem.
My dad then took the bike over (it's his bike) He also rode around on the bike for a few days with my uncle. No problem from the batter. They rode a few hundred miles in Florida without any issues.
He is on his learners, so now he is restriceted to side roads and daylight riding only. He is practicing to get his permit so the other day he went to the DMV's lot where they have painted a course onto the lot for riders to practice low speed manoeuvering.
Anyway he called me and said that after an hour of riding at very low speeds on the course, he stopped the bike for a break and when he went to get back on it. No start.
Same problem I had when I was stuck in traffic for an hour.
He got a jump, rode home. Put the battery on the charger.
Battery now at 12.6v, he says that when he hits the starter button it does not dip below 11v. When the bikle idles her get 13.2v. If he put the bike on chocke, it revs a little faster and he sees 14volts
He and I are both a little puzzled here.
The bike runs flawlessly until you ride it very slowly for a long period of time. Then the battery fades.
He is going to pull the battery from my Vstrom and try to use that one to see if it changes anything.
What could be the source of this problem?
The bike has no accessories, no extra lights and we run without the carb heater fuse installed.
