Electrical Problem - Vstar 1100

I just recently purchased a 2002 1100 that had been sitting for a few years. With the key in the on position all lights came on and everything appeared normal until I pressed the start button. As soon as I pressed it I heard a click sound and now there is no power at all and it acts as if the key is in the off position. Any idea where I should start?

I would definitely start at the battery.

A long sitting battery can loose all its power and pretty much be worthless, and not recharge, or hold a charge, or have/hold any real cranking amps, in a little as 4-6 months. Don't use a car battery to try and start it, as there are too many amps.

Even a dead motorcycle battery on a trickle charger, will not provide enough juice to start the bike. If you have a buddy with a motorcycle that you could jump off of, that would be best.

And, a new battery is something your gonna need anyway, if that ones been sitting for a long time. I use the new Li-Po batteries, this battery has been AWESOME!!! https://www.amazon.com/Battery-Tende...tender+battery

It will state that it won't fit/work for our bikes, but i can confirm, as well as a ton of other motorcyclists, that these batteries are the best. be sure and buy a charger to go with this battery. Same manufacture sells a trickle charger. You'll just need to use the foam inserts so it doesn't flop around in the battery bay.

i wouldn't touch or look at anything else, until you get a new battery in there.

check the battery connections,clean and tight. and the negative cable where it attaches to the motor underneath.

That is a bad ground, if not at the battery check where it grounds to the bike. I run into that ALL the time with cars.

Thanks for the insight. Sorry I did not mention the battery is new. I checked the connection at the battery and the positive connection was a little loose. Tightening it helped some. I will check on cleaning the ground connection. Its definitely in a difficult to access area of the engine. The problems I am now experiencing is as follows and could be from multiple issues.

The digital odometer now does not light up on the speedometer but the spedometer does light up.

The nuetral light does not light up on the speedometer.

When the nuetral light was working it would not come on when the bike was in nuetral with the kickstand down but It would come on in every gear with the kickstand up and not turn off.

The engine is now turning over when I push the start switch with the kickstand up.

The rear turn signals are now not blinking when I turn them on.

Other than a bad ground connection is there anything else that I should troubleshoot? Thanks!

does the engine turn over with the kickstand down? check the fuses. is the brake and tail light working. kickstand switch,speed sensor?
