VStar 650 Air filter brackets breaking

Good Afternoon,

<waves from the Left Coast San Francisco area>

Lucy Belle is a 2004 VStar 650 Classic.

I recently discovered broken and subsequently fixed, the two top brackets that hold her K&N air filter to the heads. Soon after fixing the brackets, I noticed that the rear broke again only in a new spot. The breaks occurred below the head covers and not at the filter itself.

Has anyone else encountered brackets that keep failing?

Thanks!

How many miles on your bike? And did someone work on your bike for you?

40k and no, I do all of my own work.

I'm the 3rd owner having purchased Lucy in Feb and I can't say who worked on her before then.

Ok, just wondering if a previous owner had taken it apart, or a shop had worked on it. Those brackets are pretty stout, it'd be interesting to see what's causing them to crack like that.

check the nuts under the head covers that hold the brackets make sure they are tight, balance the carbs too much vibration maybe? whats holding up the bottom of the air filter housing , is bottom bracket solid if the bottom bracket is loose or missing all weight will be on the top brackets, on mine the bottom bracket is the thickest of the three brackets
